“Relaxed Concerts”: Uniting Our Local Symphony, University Orchestra, Music Therapy Students, and the Community

Discover how partnerships between a music therapist, a university orchestra, and a local professional orchestra ignited new potentials for student learning, community building and arts enrichment for people of all ages and needs in the southeast region of the state. A music therapist, the Director of Education and Community Engagement of a local professional orchestra, and the conductor of a university symphony will discuss their unique roles and collaborations. They will highlight the essential contributions of volunteers, actors, musicians, and students. Outcomes, strategies, tips, and resources will be shared.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will name five strategies for creating a concert experience that supports audience members of all ages who benefit from a variety of accommodations. (IV.   2. Attendees will identify 5 strategies to engage professionals in establishing Relaxed Concerts. (IV. Professional Development and Responsibilities, B. Professional Responsibilities, 6. Conduct information sharing sessions, such as in-service workshops, for professionals and/or the community, 12. Practice within the scope of education, training, and abilities)
  3. Attendees will distinguish 3 key differences between the roles of the Music Therapist, the Director of Education and Community Engagement, and the University Orchestra Conductor. (IV.   4. Attendees will list three professional skills that volunteering music therapy students learn through their participation and supervision. (IV. Professional Development and Responsibilities, B. Professional Responsibilities, 11. Supervise staff, volunteers, practicum students, or interns)

Presenter Biographies:

Laura Pawuk, MM, MT-BC, Certified Music Imagery Specialist,​ is an Assistant Professor of Music Therapy – Mental Health, at Eastern Michigan University.

Chad Hutchinson, DMA, is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Orchestral Activities at Eastern Michigan University as well as a conductor with the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras.

As the Director of Education & Community Engagement, Yi-Ching Chen oversees the development and implementation of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s education and programs, including the welcoming concerts.
